The Workshop Compass: Your go-to tool for designing balanced, energizing workshops.

Sometimes a workshop just feels off. Not broken, necessarily.

Just… not quite what you had hoped it’d be.

The Workshop Compass is a one-page diagnostic tool (okay, technically 1.5 pages 😬) that you can use to figure out where things might be out of balance. It helps you see which components you’re leaning on most, and which kinds of energy aren’t showing up much, or at all.

You can use it to plan from scratch, or to review an outline you’ve already designed.

It’s part of Workshops as Worldbuilding, under the element of Magic & Technology, which is about exploring processes that create transformation, experimenting with tools to support our guests, and shifting toward structures that build the kind of world we want to live in.

This isn't a formula. It won't tell you exactly what to do.

(Definitely not my vibe).

It’s a compass: something to help you stay on course, avoid detours that don’t serve your purpose, and reorient you when you’re not where you want to be.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

→ The Workshop Compass: 3 Google Doc versions

  • The Full Version Includes an orientation section that explains the four directions and how they show up in workshop design. Use it if you're new to the tool or want a refresher.

  • The Compass-Only Version (Digital use) A streamlined version without the context, for when you're ready to dive in quickly. Use the dropdowns to mark which components you're using. Make a fresh copy each time you design a new session. Make a new copy for each new workshop!

  • The Compass-Only Version (Printable) Same layout, no dropdowns. You can colour it in or annotate by hand.

THIS MIGHT BE USEFUL IF:

💛 You're building a session that doesn’t quite feel like itself yet

💛 You’re trying to diagnose why a past workshop fell flat or felt monotonous

💛 You default to doing the same kinds of things (on autopilot) and want to expand your range

💛 You’re designing from intuition and want something visual to support your decisions

A Compass doesn’t decide where to go, it shows you how to get to a place of your choosing.

This tool can give you a clearer view of what’s already happening — and a way to orient yourself if something’s feeling off.

You don’t have to use it every time you plan a workshop (but you can 😉). Come back to it when you need a bit of help seeing the shape of things.
